  • We bid farewell to our accompanying team and welcome our French-speaking Laotian guide. A quick orientation tour of the largest city in southern Laos, Pakse.

Near Thatheng, you will visit the Mai Savanh Farm. This farm is unique in that it operates with a focus on sustainable and community development with the local villagers. It started with silkworm breeding to produce silk and has since expanded to include other products such as insect breeding or "healthy" organic products like sacha inchi and various types of teas. The goal of this farm is to promote sustainable and ecological practices in partnership with local communities.

    Continuation of our journey.

If time allows, a stop at the P&P Farm organic farm in Paksong (open until 5 p.m.). The farm follows organic farming standards and was certified ORGANIC by LAOS ORGANIC in December 2022. The site is open every day from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The farm produces seasonal vegetables and herbs such as carrots, mini-carrots, green beans, red/yellow cluster tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, beefsteak tomatoes, kailan mushrooms, spring onions, endives, kohlrabi, zucchinis, green peppers, green lettuces, red cos lettuces, rosemary, thyme, oregano, parsley, basil, beetroots, celery, butternuts, Japanese sweet potatoes, radishes, turnips, etc. Some of them grow outdoors, others under greenhouses.

Day 7Day in a 4x4 in the Bolaven Plateau

Day 7Day in a 4x4 in the Bolaven Plateau

  • Breakfast at the hotel before heading to Paksong (around 9 a.m.).

The Bolaven Plateau is a highland region that spans the provinces of Champassak, Salavan, Xekong, and Attapeu in southern Laos. Located in the Annamite mountain range, the region's temperate climate makes it a paradise for coffee growers. Its stunning waterfalls and numerous small villages are sure to captivate you. The plateau gets its name from the Laven ethnic group, which historically dominated the region.

This morning, head to Ban Beng, a small town nestled in the heart of the Bolaven Plateau. Meet Mr. Khamsone, a local tour guide, and hop into one of his vintage Soviet and Russian "jeeps" for a ride along a rustic trail that winds through local bushland and rolling farmland planted with lettuce, peppers, ginger, cucumbers, cabbages, etc., in season, on the way to Tad Moun waterfall. Upon arrival, enjoy leisure time at the waterfall, located at the foot of the extinct volcano of Phou Sanat.

Hike to Mr. Khamsone's farm called "Mystic Mountain Coffee" through lush vegetation and plantations. Arrive at his farm for a lunch of local specialties.

Settle in with his host family.

In the afternoon, visit his coffee plantation to learn more about the production process.

A young coffee tree is productive three to four years after planting. The bush can then live for several decades. The crown is pruned to prevent excessive height growth. When the fruits ripen (six to eight months after flowering for arabica - nine to eleven months for robusta), coffee harvesting can begin. Two methods are used, picking or stripping. Then come the drying and roasting processes, the latter developing the aroma and final color of the coffee.

Then, continue the hike to Phoukatouk Mountain. In the late afternoon, return to the host family. The rest of the evening is free.

Dinner served at Mr. Khamsone's farm.

Depending on the weather and safety/accessibility constraints due to the condition of the tracks, this program may be modified without notice by our local partner. The spirit of the program will be kept by adapting as best as possible to the current conditions. Especially in periods of rain and the resumption of tourism in the region.

A day that is likely to be a bit messy (prepare clothes that can get wet, a towel) but certainly enriching, full of sincerity and authenticity.

Day 9The "4000 Islands"

Day 9The "4000 Islands"

  • This morning, we will head early towards the impressive twin waterfalls of Tad Fane, as well as the waterfalls of Tas Yuang and Tad Champee.

Then, we will head south to Ban Kakasang before boarding a motorized canoe that will take us among the "4000 Islands" of the Mekong.

You will reach the islands of Done Det and Done Khone, peaceful lands with a strong French colonial past, evident in its buildings, the bridge connecting the 2 islands, and its railway used to transport goods across the rapids.

    Check-in at your hotel.

Lunch at Sengahloune restaurant on Khone Island.

Pick up some local bicycles and today, the program involves riding on the sandy paths of Don Det and Don Khone islands accompanied by your guide!

At the extreme south of Laos, on the Mekong, in the region of Si Phan Don ("4000 Islands" in Lao), a rock formation blocks the course of the Mekong and creates waterfalls of about 15 m drop over a width of more than 10 km. This obstacle to river traffic led the French colonial administration to create a railway line as early as 1893 to facilitate the transshipment of gunboats to ensure the protection of the newly established border between Siam (Thailand today) and Laos. The railway, at the height of its development, runs through the islands of Don Khone in the south and Don Det in the north for a total length of about 14 km and ends with a transshipment dock at each end. It was built by French and Vietnamese masons, Chinese, and Lao peasants.

You will ride along flat paths that will lead you to some iconic sites like the ancient locomotive, the 13-arch bridge dating back to the early 20th century French colonial era, which connects Don Det to Don Khone, and the remains of colonial buildings.

Take your time and go slowly!

By bike, you will explore the Lippi Waterfalls, locally known as Tad Sompamit (very easy level, flat route), while enjoying the peaceful rhythm of the island. An ideal and calm way to observe, capture, and immerse yourself in local rural life. The activity is intense during the rainy season when fishermen build bamboo fish traps in unlikely places at the risk of their lives, using paths on ropes stretched over the raging waterfalls.

In the late afternoon, find your little corner of paradise, relax, optionally order a drink, and watch the sunset on the horizon with the majestic backdrop of the Mekong, its islands, and its residents returning from fishing, practicing canoe racing, playing, washing, living.

    The evening will be free.
