Chao Phraya - Nomadays
Chao Phraya

Chao Phraya is one of Thailand's most important rivers, after the Mekong and the Salween. Crossing the country from north to south, it remains a major axis for river transport in the country.
Chao Phraya is best known in Bangkok through its famous canals, floating markets, and boat taxis like the Chao Phraya Express. A true artery in the capital, taking it is a real experience to be tested during a stay in Bangkok.

A little more about the Chao Phraya River

The Chao Phraya River originates at the confluence of the Ping and Nan rivers in Nakhon Sawan, in the north of the country, and flows southward to the Gulf of Thailand. With its 372 kilometers in length, it ranks among the most important rivers in Thailand. It passes through many cities, more or less important: Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chainat, Singburi, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, Bangkok, and Samut Prakan.

The Chao Phraya in Bangkok

The Chao Phraya River is particularly known in Bangkok for its numerous canals. Becoming a true artery of the capital, the river is used as a waterway where numerous bus boats or taxi boats called Long Tail circulate daily.
The Chao Phraya divides Bangkok into two, with Thonburi on one side, the former capital before Bangkok, and Nonthaburi on the other.

Taking the boat in Bangkok

The boat bus may be one of the best ways to get around the capital. Several lines and numerous stations extend along the canals to take you to major neighborhoods and main points of interest.
There are four lines of public boats and a tourist line that stops at the main points of interest. The lines are distinguished by colors (orange, yellow, green, one without color for the local line, and blue for the tourist line). The boats on the lines are recognized by the color of the flags they display.
By taking these taxis and river buses, you will discover Bangkok in a different light. Along the canals, you'll see many temples, orchards, and small and flowery Thai houses, and you'll witness the amazing active life on the banks of the khlongs.
