Muay Thai boxing in the rice fields of the North

Muay Thai is a martial art that originated from the ancient practices of Muay Biran (traditional boxing) and Krabi Krabong (weapons practice).

To fight, the nak-muay (the boxer) uses punches, kicks, elbows, knees, and shins. It is the most popular type of boxing in Southeast Asia.

Far from the tourist factories in the South of the country, we offer you a week of training with the best trainers in the country in the mountains of Northern Thailand, in Pai.

Day 5The mountain tribes

Day 5The mountain tribes

  • Today, we head into the mountains overlooking the city of Chiang Mai, in the Mae Wang region, where we will embark on a guided trek to discover the Karen hill tribes of northern Thailand. The Karen are the largest ethnic minority group in the country, with an estimated population of approximately 1 million people. Originally from Tibet, they migrated southward to Myanmar and northern Thailand.

The Karen people are traditionally animists, with a strong belief in the spirit world, especially spirits of the "earth and water" that control the productivity of the land and call the rice to grow. Much of Karen tribe life is thus dictated by spirits, and they are a highly superstitious people. The village chief is a revered figure, leading rituals and to be consulted when fixing dates for ceremonies or events in the village.

We begin our trek through the still-green rice fields of the region, discovering the Mae Wang waterfall. We will visit a Karen village where we will have lunch and meet the locals.
