Ban Khiri Wong

Perched high in the mountains, Ban Khiri Wong boasts being the place in Thailand with the cleanest air and purest ozone layer. Located a two and a half hour drive from Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Literally translated, Ban Khiri Wong evokes a "Dwelling established in the mountain circle." The village’s name clearly reveals its focus on trekking and mountain tourism. Nestled in the high hills of Nakhon Si Thammarat in southern Thailand, Ban Khiri Wong stands out for its charming landscapes and the friendly hospitality of its residents. There's nothing better than farm stays to immerse oneself in this rural atmosphere. More adventurous visitors can climb the majestic peak of Khao Luang, which at 1835 meters above sea level is the highest point in Southern Thailand. Peaceful walkers, on the other hand, can explore the surrounding villages known for weaving, farming, and fruit cultivation. The exhilaration of the peaks, delightful greenery, river landscapes, and waterfalls guarantee a complete change of scenery, while fresh farm cuisine evokes tender childhood memories.

Historical notes

The peaceful village of Khiri Wong is situated within the boundaries of Khao Luang National Park, established in 1974. Administratively, it belongs to Kamlon, tambon of Lan Saka, a central district in Nakhon Si Thammarat province. Families of farmers settled here over 200 years ago, originally naming it Bann Khun.

In 1988, a devastating flood struck the village, washing away everything from the local monastery to residential homes. Thanks to the courage of everyone involved, Khiri Wong quickly recovered from this disaster.

To establish a new livelihood, the local community capitalized on the natural setting combining wild landscapes and carefully tended plantations. Emphasis was placed on promoting local products, a successful endeavor recognized with an award in 1998 from the Tourism Authority of Thailand for the best cultural and community tours.

Present day

Agriculture forms the backbone of Khiri Wong's economy. In recent years, there has been a rise in vegetable and fruit production alongside rice cultivation. Farmers have implemented an integrated farming system that balances food security, fertility management, and preservation of landscape beauty. Villagers now enjoy more stable incomes, not only through staggered harvests but also from increasing tourist visits. Ecotourism offerings include trekking tours, homestays, and visits to craft workshops.
