Amphawa

Located near Bangkok, Amphawa is a favored destination for tourists seeking to immerse themselves in the heart of Thai life. Less known and smaller than Damnoen Saduak, Amphawa's floating market is said to be more authentic, with a large majority of Thai visitors.

This small town, which currently has about 5,000 inhabitants, lives to the rhythm of its markets and its small river trade.

A brief history of Amphawa

During the Kingdom of Ayutthaya, the Amphawa region was home to only a small community of farmers and traders. Famous at the time for its river trade and agricultural products, Amphawa actively participated in the important trading role of the Samut Songkhram province.

With the arrival of shopping centers and other major land markets, the commercial role of the floating market gradually declined. It is somewhat thanks to tourism that the mayor of the city decided to highlight the cultural heritage of his region and thus revive the commercial activity of the market, much to the delight of merchants and travelers.

Amphawa Floating Market

One usually goes to Amphawa to discover its floating market. Highly frequented by locals, it has managed to retain a certain appreciable authenticity. It takes place every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

It is only in the late afternoon that the market starts to come alive. Foreign tourists are quite rare, and you can start to smell the aromas of spices and seafood emanating from the "kitchen boats." Do not hesitate to stop and taste a grilled squid or fish, even if it's not mealtime; the products are generally of high quality, so it would be a shame to miss out.

As night falls, the market lights up. Between the boats and the small wooden shops, everything comes alive in a joyful, warm, and friendly atmosphere, although the attendance is higher. You can order several dishes that will be prepared for you on-site in the boats and enjoy your meal sitting on the steps of the bank. Then stroll through the alleys along the canal and stop by the shops, where you will find all kinds of products: clothing, souvenirs, handicrafts, jewelry, etc.

The Firefly Ballet

In the evening, another nocturnal attraction attracts visitors: firefly hunting. Board the boats and go in search of fireflies. The small boats move away slightly from the hustle and bustle to quickly find themselves in the north. This is the moment to open your eyes! Hundreds of fireflies illuminate the trees and fly off to form a beautiful light show. A very pleasant little walk that brings out our inner children.

Discovering the King Rama II Memorial Park

A visit to the small town of Amphawa is not only about discovering its floating market. The memorial park dedicated to Rama II is a perfect example of a possible visit to Amphawa. The site is open every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Here, you can discover various art objects that reflect the different lifestyles of the inhabitants during the reign of King Rama II. You will also see a statue of the sovereign. You can end your visit at the shop and buy some local products and fruits.

Temples in Amphawa

Wat Bang Kung Temple

This Buddhist sanctuary is located not far from the Talat Nam floating market. Built during the Ayutthaya kingdom, the religious building is now better known as the "Banyan tree temple." This name comes from the fact that it is covered with banyans, a species of tree from the ficus family that grows in several regions of Asia. Its appearance is reminiscent of the temple of Angkor. When you are inside, you can admire a large Buddha statue covered with gold leaves. It should be noted that every weekend, many faithful come to offer some offerings at the foot of the statue.

This temple played an important role during the fierce battle between the Siamese army and that of Burma. It is also recognized as a war memorial. The inhabitants of the area come here to pay tribute to General Taksin and to show their respect for this strong political figure who would later become king.

Wat Bang Khae Noi Temple

This one is also located near the Amphawa floating market. Its construction is more recent. It was built toward the end of the 19th century. It is better known as the "Teak Temple" since the materials used to build it are mainly composed of teak wood. The sculptures visible on its walls symbolize episodes from Buddha's past lives. Moreover, the quarters of the local Buddhist monks are located not far from this sanctuary.

Maeklong Railway Market or Mae Klong Railway Market

Unlike the floating market, this one takes place every day on the railway line that connects Baan Laem and Mae Klong. It is located about 7 kilometers southeast of the floating market.

It is interesting to go there when the train passes to observe all the merchants wrap up their stalls and fold their tarpaulins to let the train pass, and then see them reinstall everything with skill. This cheerful chaos lasts only a few seconds—the time it takes for the train to pass.

However, be sure to respect safety distances when the train passes. There's no point in taking unnecessary risks for the best souvenir snapshots.

At the market, you will find fruits, vegetables, fish, seafood, meat, etc.

Climate
