The city of Kanchanaburi is located near the border area with Myanmar. Not far from Bangkok, Kanchanaburi is often included in Thailand travel itineraries. History of Kanchanaburi City in Thailand

The history of the city and the region itself is closely linked to the famous Bridge over the River Kwai.

In December 1941, the Japanese embarked on their policy of expansion in Asia and targeted French Indochina, Dutch Indonesia, British Malaya, and Burma. With Thailand, the Japanese reached an agreement and, feeling their supply lines weakening towards Burma, decided to build a 250-kilometer railway between Burma and Thailand.

However, the route had to pass through somewhat hostile regions, bringing many difficulties. The workforce employed consisted of prisoners of war and local workers (Thais, Burmese, Malays and Indonesians). Built in just a few months despite the complicated geographical conditions and lack of equipment, the railway cost the lives of nearly 100,000 workers and about 12,000 prisoners. This is what earned it the nickname "Death Railway."

During the same period, the bridge was bombed about ten times. After the war, the Thai government asked the Japanese for help in restoring the bridge over the River Kwai to attract more tourists to the region.

To complement these visits, follow the rails on the Hellfire Pass trail, the most deadly section of the railway, now transformed into a memorial path. It is not recommended to visit between May and October, as this period corresponds to the rainy season. Heavy rains often fall in September. As for the average temperature, it hovers around 30°C.

How to get to Kanchanaburi from Bangkok?

By bus

From Bangkok, it takes about 3 hours by bus. If you are in the capital, head to the Sai Tai Mai bus station. Buses to Kanchanaburi depart every half hour. The first bus usually leaves at 5:30 a.m. The activity of the carriers usually ends around 10:30 p.m. The ticket price is around 80 baht per person. Additionally, at Mo Chit bus station, departures are from 5 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The price is a bit higher (around 130 baht).

By train

In Bangkok, trains to Kanchanaburi depart from Thonburi station around 7:30 a.m. By train, the journey takes about 2.5 hours. The landscapes along the way are very pleasant, making the train a beautiful experience.

By minivan

This mode of transportation is the fastest way to reach Kanchanaburi. This type of vehicle can generally accommodate about ten passengers. If you are in Bangkok, go to the Victory Monument. The price of the journey costs around 130 baht. Generally, minivans to Kanchanaburi depart from 6 am onwards. They finish their service around 6 p.m.
