Phuket

The largest island in Thailand, Phuket, stretches into the Andaman Sea in the southwest of the country. As Thailand's most popular tropical paradise, Phuket offers dream beaches, nature excursions, incredible underwater worlds, and delicious cuisine, making it a delight for visitors.

History of Phuket Island

Phuket was not always known by its current name. Europeans initially referred to it as Djonkseylon or Junk Ceylon. It wasn't until much later that it received its definitive name, "Phuket," derived from the Malay word "Bukit," meaning "hill." The island particularly attracted Europeans due to its tin reserves. In 1685, the French agreed with the then Thai authorities on a treaty to exploit this mineral, but were forced to leave the country in 1688. Around 1770, British traders arrived in Phuket.

The island was also affected by the war against the Burmese. Initially, it managed to avoid enemy attacks thanks to Francis Light, who, while patrolling the coasts of Phuket, encountered Burmese fleets preparing to attack the island. He sent a warning to the islanders about the imminent invasion. Despite the precautions, the Burmese did manage to take possession of Phuket, but this occupation was short-lived. The local counterattacks forced the Burmese to retreat and leave on March 13, 1785.

The 19th century saw the arrival of the Chinese, who began mining tin. When Rama V ascended the throne, Phuket became the administrative center for tin production. When the country transitioned from a monarchy to a parliamentary system, Phuket became an autonomous province, and rubber plantations were established on the island. These plantations contributed to Thailand's global recognition for rubber production, a reputation that continues to this day.

Phuket gained fame in the tourism sector in the 1970s, when hippies began to discover this earthly paradise. By the early 1980s, it had become one of the most popular destinations in the world.

The December 2004 tsunami

This natural disaster left a heavy legacy for the island's residents, resulting in many lost lives and the destruction of much of the coastal infrastructure.

Today, a popular vacation destination in Thailand

Phuket Town, particularly its old quarter, immerses you in a colorful setting with its colonial houses painted in yellow, blue, green, etc. Many of these charming buildings have been converted into hotels, restaurants, or small shops.
