History

The 2004 Patong Earthquake and Tsunami

The tsunami triggered by the December 26, 2004 earthquake in the Indian Ocean caused devastation along the west coast of Phuket Island. This natural disaster is considered one of the most impactful in the country's history, with Patong being one of the hardest-hit areas. Fortunately, the resort area recovered quickly.

Today

Patong stands out from other Thai beach resorts with its crescent-shaped beach stretching over 4 kilometers. The shoreline is lined with various establishments catering to local tourism, including restaurants, cafes, bars, massage parlors, and hotels. Additionally, the town center, particularly Bangla Road, maintains a lively atmosphere with nightclubs, karaoke bars, and more, making it the busiest thoroughfare both day and night.

Exploring Jungceylon Shopping Mall on Bangla Road

While in the heart of Patong, don't miss visiting this shopping mall located at the intersection of the famous Bangla Road. Inside, you'll find numerous restaurants, clothing stores, a bowling alley, a Shell museum, a massage salon, and more.

Water sports enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy in Patong, including jet skiing, among other popular activities. If renting a jet ski, be cautious and document the vehicle's condition thoroughly to avoid potential scams where renters falsely claim damages.

Where to find peace and quiet?

For those seeking to escape Patong's hustle and bustle, Paradise Beach is an excellent choice. This beautiful white sandy beach lined with coconut trees offers a more secluded setting and is located about 5 kilometers east of the resort area. You can reach it by walking along the beach if you're fit and adventurous, or by boat, car, or tuk-tuk.

Freedom Beach is another peaceful retreat known for its stunning landscapes. It's located just 10 minutes away from Patong but can only be accessed by long-tail boat. Boats typically depart from the southern end of Patong's main beach, with round-trip costs ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 baht.
