Khao Yai National Park is located in the provinces of Nakhon Ratchasima, Saraburi, Prachinburi, and Nakhon Nayok. Covering an area of 2,168 square kilometers, it is Thailand's largest protected area. It is also considered the most famous in the country. It will delight nature enthusiasts with its numerous landscapes and rich biodiversity.

History

Established in 1962, Khao Yai National Park boasts unique biodiversity. In 2005, this protected area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The park today

Well-maintained, the park shines with splendor. It includes a visitor orientation center, dining areas, accommodations, and bicycle rentals. In addition to Thai, the park staff speaks English.

Fauna and Flora

The park teems with life; 800 species of animals live freely within it. Discover elephants, bears, monkeys, tigers, deer, birds, insects, and reptiles in their natural habitats.

This protected area is home to no fewer than 2000 species of plants. Trees, ferns, flowers, vines, and mushrooms. Vegetation changes with altitude.

Terrain and hydrography

Its highest point, Khao Rom, peaks at 1,351 meters. The park boasts numerous waterfalls. The most popular ones are Haew Narok and Haew Suwat.

When to visit the park?

The best time to observe animals is between March and May. This is the hot season, with average temperatures around 28 °C. During this period, animals gather at water points to quench their thirst and cool off.

The climate is milder between October and March. There is less rain, giving you more time to explore the park's ecosystem.

How to get there?

Khao Yai National Park is 200 km from Bangkok. By car, the journey takes an average of 3 hours. The north entrance of the park is located in the town of Pak Chong. People take minibuses and buses to get there before heading to Khao Yai. Those traveling by train face a journey of 4 to 5 hours.

Hours and fees

Admission costs 400 baht for adults. The price is halved for children.

The guided tour of the park costs an average of 500 baht.

Practical tips

Ensure your skin is not exposed to snakes and leeches. Wear closed-toe shoes and clothing that covers your body well. It would be ideal if your clothes were also waterproof.
