Northern Thailand, bordered by Myanmar and Laos, is particularly known for its mountains covered in dense forests and its numerous villages that harbor timeless tribes. Lost amidst the mountains, near the Burmese border, a small village named Mae Salong (officially called Santikhiri) has gained its reputation from its tea plantations. In the heart of the Golden Triangle, you can admire its magnificent mountain-side plantations, belonging to the producer 101 Tea Plantation, or Wang Put Tan.

History

The "101 Tea Plantation" was established by the Tsai family, originally from Taiwan, who have been cultivating tea for several generations. This involves various tea varieties, including green tea and the famous oolong tea, which is now grown on the hills of the village of Santhikiri.

The introduction of tea to Thai territory was mainly aimed at dissuading farmers from continuing their work in opium fields. Indeed, poppy cultivation was once practiced in the northern part of the country, especially in small mountain villages like Mae Salong. This substitution initiative was taken by the Thai government and even the managers of the tea company to definitively eliminate opium cultivation in Thailand. It also aimed to help the region's inhabitants earn a living in a more legal manner and improve their quality of life.

World-recognized quality

In 2002, discussions during the China Pu Er Tea International mainly revolved around the "101 Tea Plantation." The debate focused on the historical and economic value of this plantation, as well as its role in the tourism sector.

Winner of the 2004 Tea Festival

During the first tea festival held in 2004, the 101 Tea Plantation was selected for its oolong tea No. 12 and won first place. That same year, it participated in the Take Me 2 Tea exhibition in Las Vegas and impressed the audience with the quality of its products.

Discovering the "101 Tea Plantation" is an activity not to be missed if your journey in Thailand takes you to the forests of the north. How to get there?

To discover the 101 Tea Plantation, you need to reach the village of Mae Salong, located about 80 km from Chiang Mai. Minibuses operate the route daily.
