The Transbalinaise

This adventure tour unveils the hidden face of Bali: far from the crowded beaches, this trek through the heart of the island's grandiose landscapes and Balinese culture is an opportunity to cross Bali from west to east, from village to village, from temple to temple, between volcanoes, rice terraces, volcanic lakes and tropical forests. The summits of the island's two active volcanoes, Mount Batur (1,717m) and Mount Agung (3,142m), are also on the agenda.

Day 11The Gods summit

  • Night ascent of the Agung volcano (it is essential to reach the summit early in the morning to ensure a clear view). At dawn, you reach one of the rims of the crater, at an altitude of 2,850m. You are, in a way, at the antecima of the Agung volcano. Bali's highest and most revered mountain, the Agung volcano dominates almost the entire south and east of the island with its imposing silhouette, often shrouded in a veil of clouds and mist. Although most books and maps give it a height of 3,142 metres, some say that the top didn't resist́ the eruption of 1963 and that it is now only 3,014 metres high! After the descent, you return to Sidemen. In the late morning, short transfer to the royal baths of Tirtagangga (whose exact translation is "The waters of the Ganges"), on the south-eastern slopes of Agung. Day 12The original Bali

  • You resume your trek through fields and rice paddies, heading for the Bali Aga village of Tenganan, which has preserved́ the Balinese culture that predates the Javanese influence of the Hindu Majapahit dynasty. To protect their village from the harmful effects of intrusion by those uninitiated in the cult of Batara Indra, all visitors are welcomed there from midday until nightfall, after which everyone is asked́ to continue on their way. There was a time when the villagers of Tenganan would even sweep away the footprints of visitors to completely erase their arrival. In the afternoon, transfer to the seaside resort of Sanur.
