Suan Hin Pha Ngam

Overlooking the village of Ban Pha Ngam, the magnificent rock formations of Suan Hin Pha Ngam attract thousands of visitors. A unique attraction in Loei!

The erosion affecting farmers and reducing crop yields has given rise to fantastic geomorphological structures. For proof, look no further than the rock garden of Suan Hin Pha Ngam. This beautiful mountainous region is just an hour's drive from Phu Kradueng National Park. Wander freely through the labyrinth of rocks, traverse dense green jungles, and discover a charming little waterfall. As for its nickname, "Kunming of Thailand," only a visit to Suan Hin Pha Ngam can confirm if it truly lives up to its reputation. It's a must-see attraction on your next trip to Loei, a tourist destination in Isan!

Historical notes

Around 210 to 230 million years ago, a geological accident struck the mountain. Over the years, the terrain broke down, with parts of the massif collapsing to reveal these fantastic limestone peaks. The eroded rocks bear a resemblance to the landscapes of Kunming Stone Forest in southwest China, hence the nickname "Kunming Mueang Thai" or "Kunming of Thailand" commonly used by locals. Translated into English, Suan Hin Pha Ngam means "beautiful rock park."

Today

Nestled northeast of Loei, about twenty kilometers from Nong Hin village, Suan Hin Pha Ngam's stone garden is a sought-after natural site. It sees a steady stream of Thai visitors throughout the day, though few foreigners make their way here. What a missed opportunity! Hikers, nature lovers, and avid photographers would be remiss not to skip this beautiful park during their Loei vacation.

While public transportation doesn't serve the park and a lack of English information somewhat hinders its tourist appeal, Suan Phin Pha Ngam remains a natural masterpiece of Loei.

Visiting Suan Hin Pha Ngam Park

Two modes of transportation: walking or a tractor ride

Visiting the park requires the company of a forest ranger; self-guided tours are not allowed. A few guides speak basic English. At the visitor center, they will ask, "Would you like to walk or take the Kubota tractor tour?" If you encounter English-speaking guides, your visit will be smooth; otherwise, simple phrases like "yes," "no," "tractor," and "walk" along with gestures should suffice.

Most Thais opt for the tractor ride, while foreigners enjoy the three-kilometer walking trail through winding paths in the tropical jungle.

The park exudes tranquility and serenity, with birdsong amidst the foliage, the whisper of the breeze, and sunlight filtering through the trees adding magic to the stroll.

The hike is relatively easy, with mostly flat terrain except for a one-meter climb through a narrow gorge. The trail passes through various limestone formations. Don't miss the photo opportunities at the Suan Hom and Suan Din waterfalls.

The trail leads to an observation point atop a hill, offering breathtaking views of the park and surrounding countryside. The cliff resembling Kunming's limestone peaks is clearly visible from this vantage point. This viewpoint marks the end of the circuit.

Practical information

Opening hours and admission

The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., excluding holidays. Entry to the park is charged. A local guide costs 100 baht (€2.8) per group of up to ten people. Sharing the tour with other tourists can reduce the cost per person. The tractor tour costs 20 baht (€0.56) per person.

When to visit the Rock Garden?

To fully appreciate this gem in Loei, visit during the dry season. Hiking trails may be slippery during rainy periods.

How to get there?

Ban Pha Ngam is part of Loei province in northeast Thailand, approximately 390 km from Bangkok.

Locating the park's headquarters can be challenging, as most road signs are in Thai script, with "Rock Garden" mentioned only occasionally. For first-time visitors, it's advisable to hail a taxi or hire a chauffeured rental car to take you there. It's about an hour's drive from downtown Loei to the park, or 20 minutes from Nong Hin. Since the park is located in a remote area, round-trip transportation costs are necessary.
