History

As the capital of the eponymous province, Prachuap Khiri Khan is a key point between central and southern Thailand. The town was founded during the Ayutthaya Kingdom and was originally known as Muang Na Rang. After the fall of the kingdom, the inhabitants left, and the town faded into obscurity. In 1856, it was revived under its current name, Prachuap Khiri Khan.

During the invasion on December 8, 1941, Prachuap Khiri Khan was one of seven points of entry for Japanese troops. Despite an announced armistice, the local Thai commander, fearing a ruse, continued resistance. Three hours later, the ceasefire order was finally delivered in person, ending the confrontation. A memorial and museum commemorate this historical event.

Climb "Monkey Mountain" to admire the Khao Chong Krachok Temple

Located to the north of the city center, this hill is the main attraction of Prachuap Khiri Khan. Prepare for some exercise; there are 396 steps to climb to reach the top, where the majestic Khao Chong Krachok Temple stands. The Wing 5 military base is now a relaxation spot open to the public. The old aircraft on display evoke pleasant nostalgia, while fishing boats wait patiently on the shore. The area also includes a Langur conservation area. Unlike the monkeys at Khao Chong Krachok, these langurs are calm and gentle. You can even feed them. To access the base, you need to register at the kiosk at the entrance.

Spend a day at Ao Manao Beach

Ao Manao, located south of the city and part of the Wing 5 base, is the only beach in Prachuap Khiri Khan where you can swim, due to its cleanliness. You can relax under a parasol or enjoy seafood restaurants nearby. Many activities are available on land. Young travelers will find enjoyment at the zoo on the premises, while adrenaline seekers can enjoy quad biking.

Visit Wat Ao Noi

To the north of the city, Ao Noi Bay is less touristy. Although there is a small beach, swimming is not recommended due to water pollution. The small fishing village is worth a visit, but the main attraction here is Wat Ao Noi. Nestled in a beautiful seaside park, this temple features a small teak viharn flanked by two opulent Naga serpents. The hill overlooking the temple houses Khan Kradai Cave, where two large reclining Buddha statues are located.
