History of Phayao Province

Situated about 100 km northeast of Chiang Mai, Phayao, founded around the late 11th century, only gained prominence from the 13th century onwards. In 1287, its ruler Ngam Muang forged an alliance with the kingdoms of Lan Na and Sukhothai, marking the city's golden age. However, this period of prosperity was cut short in 1338 when a successor to the Lan Na king Mengrai besieged and plundered the city.

Sukhothai's army in turn attacked Phayao in 1439, but they were repelled. The following centuries saw Burmese domination, during which time the local population gradually abandoned the region.

In the 19th century, the reign of King Rama III offered a new beginning for Phayao. In 1843, it was elevated as a frontier town against the Burmese army, alongside Chiang Rai and Muang Ngao. Attached to Chiang Rai Province since 1897, Phayao finally became an independent province in 1977.

Frequent buses connect Chiang Mai to Phayao in about 3 hours. You can also take a bus from Bangkok to Phayao, but the journey takes much longer, between 10 and 12 hours.

Ride a motorcycle from Chiang Mai to Phayao

Motorcycling is an attractive option for those departing from Chiang Mai. It's recommended to choose a 250 cc motorcycle due to the mountainous terrain. Along the way, you'll have the opportunity to appreciate the landscape of northern Thailand. The journey takes 4 to 5 hours on two wheels.
