Mae Sai waterfall

Plunging 15 meters into a basin of crystal-clear water, the Mae Sai waterfall is a highlight of an excursion point during a trip to Chiang Rai. Located in Mae Sai village, 20 kilometers from Chiang Rai, it deserves more attention than tourists typically give it as a mere gateway to Myanmar. Situated in northern Thailand, within the Golden Triangle, the destination boasts a spectacular two-tiered waterfall. The trail to the waterfall winds through lush jungle, rice paddies, and coffee plantations, often bustling with farmers. This makes it an essential experience on your next visit to Chiang Rai, particularly appealing to hiking enthusiasts, cliff jumpers, and picnickers seeking a swim in the woods.

A brief description of Mae Sai Waterfall

Mae Sai Waterfall is part of Mae Kok National Park. Provincial forest authorities in Chiang Rai have protected the area due to its significant economic and environmental role. Agricultural prosperity relies heavily on the mountainous sources that feed the waterfall.

Despite its natural integrity, the waterfall is also known for its clarity and depth, attracting a diverse crowd of swimmers, romantic strollers, seasoned climbers, and city dwellers looking to reconnect with nature.

Hiking to Mae Sai Waterfall

The waterfall cascades in two separate stages, 100 meters apart. Accessible by motorbike, the journey takes less than half an hour. Walkers, absorbed by the local agricultural scenery, may lose track of time. The vibrant green hills alternate with rice fields, tea, and coffee plantations. Mountain passes stretch to the horizon in a uniform landscape with well-maintained roads.

Two paths lead to the waterfall's levels. While photographers appreciate both, as they are nearly identical in height (15 meters), divers and swimmers favor the second stage. It's larger and deeper, with more vigorous waters and denser forest cover. The drawback is the colder water at its base.

The Mae Sai waterfall showcases the natural beauty and potential of Mae Sai, a quaint town often overlooked as just a Myanmar gateway. Visitors can swim, enjoy outdoor lunches, or engage in cliff diving. Adventurous souls can even camp in the jungle and explore Mae Kok National Park's treasures. Culture enthusiasts can visit the nearby hill tribe villages of Lisu, Lahu, and Hmong. Divers should be cautious about water depth, which varies seasonally; aim for the central part of the pool, not the edges!

Best time to visit

Like northern Thailand's climate, Mae Sai is notably cooler. Plan your excursion between December and April to avoid the hot summer months from May onward.

Getting to Mae Sai

To reach this stunning waterfall, your options are a motorbike or bicycle. There are no bus or minibus services covering the 20 kilometers between Mae Kok Park and Chiang Rai city center. Renting a motorbike costs around 5 euros (160–200 baht) per day, while a bicycle rental is about 2.8 euros.

Take Route 1207 along Chiang Rai's west side, starting from Ban Rai Mu to Ban Huai Khom Nai. When you reach a large, easily recognizable parking area, follow the lane to Ban Cha Lae village. The waterfall is a short 5-minute walk from there.
