Hueang River

At the border between Thailand and Laos, this 110-kilometer-long river brings life and beauty everywhere it flows. Its banks and waters abound with biodiversity, creating idyllic landscapes. It is a major tributary of the Mekong River, meeting it at Chiang Khan in Loei Province.

In areas where the current is gentler near the shores, the river waters are translucent, revealing everything beneath. Closer to its source in Na Haeo, the river is brown and muddy due to erosion from clayey soil banks. Near its junction with the Mekong, the waterway blends with the river's green hue. This river often appears bifurcated, with these two distinct colors.

The Hueang River: a natural boundary fostering connections

Originating in the hills of Na Haeo district, the majority of this river (90 km) serves a similar purpose as the mountainous massif of Luang Prabang, acting as a natural border between Thailand and Laos. Living in harmony along the picturesque banks of this river, Laotians and Thais primarily engage in fishing and agriculture. Buddhism is a common religion among the riverside communities, maintaining peace through its principles of honesty, simplicity, and integrity.

Today, a crucial hydrographic network for two countries' economies

Goods, tourists, and foodstuffs all pass through this waterway, connecting numerous Thai and Laotian villages. The river sustains life for the riverside populations of Dan Sai, Phu Ruea, and Tha Li districts. Along its banks and highlands, its waters irrigate vegetable fields and orchards. Abundant in fish, the Hueang River has served as a pantry for Thai and Laotians for centuries.

Essential information before you go

How to get there?

From Bangkok, head to the Mochit bus terminal to catch a bus to Loei. Alternatively, Loei city center is about 5 km from its international gateway. Once in the city, you can rent a boat to cruise the Hueang River.

The best time to visit

To enjoy sunny weather throughout your excursion, plan a river cruise between January and February or November and December. Boat trips are not advisable in September due to heavy rainfall and turbulent waters, which obscure views with torrential rains.
