Ang Thong National Marine Park

A protected archipelago of 42 pristine islands in the Gulf of Thailand, Ang Thong Marine National Park is a must-visit excursion from the islands of Koh Samui or Koh Phangan. Famous for its natural beauty, featuring lush green islets and beautiful white sandy beaches, its landscape is often likened to Vietnam's Halong Bay.

Everything to know about Ang Thong Marine National Park

Declared a marine national park in 1980, Mu Ko Ang Thong comprises 42 islands spread over 102 square kilometers. It is located about thirty kilometers from the tourist island of Koh Samui and forty kilometers from Koh Phangan. Visitors can admire the scattered islands of Ang Thong from their beaches.

As this reserve is protected, it has allowed numerous species of birds, primates, reptiles, fish, and corals to thrive. The islands are uninhabited, but it is possible to stay overnight on the main island of Koh Wua Talap. Fine sandy beaches, diverse marine life, lush vegetation, caves, and a lagoon make Ang Thong Marine Park an essential destination for a day trip from Koh Phangan or Koh Samui.

Excursion to Ang Thong National Park

Day trips are organized daily (known as "one day trips" locally) from the neighboring islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and even Koh Tao. Departures are around 9 a.m., with a return by approximately 3 p.m.

Board a boat and embark on an exploration of the preserved beauty of Ang Thong's islands. Breakfast is served on board, and lunch is provided either on the beach or on the boat, depending on the vessel and company chosen.

Excursions to Ang Thong offer various activities: relaxation and swimming on fine sandy beaches; snorkeling to appreciate the beauty of the underwater world; kayaking; and hiking.

Of all its islands, the largest and perhaps the most famous is Koh Wua Talap. It is possible to hike to its summit and discover one of Thailand's most beautiful views: a panoramic vista of the park's islands surrounded by turquoise waters. Plan for approximately 1 to 2 hours of hiking to reach the summit and enjoy this breathtaking view.

Koh Mae Koh is also a highlight of the excursions with Talay Nai, with its emerald lagoon of 200 meters. Access is via a series of steps. At the top of the island, you can also enjoy a splendid view of the lake below and the surrounding islands of the park.

Try to spot Koh Ling island, distinguished by its rock formations resembling a monkey's head.

Although the islands are sometimes crowded with tourists, this day trip is truly worth it. The landscapes are so magnificent that you'll easily forget about the other travelers.

Some companies offer slightly different excursions to limit encounters with too many tourists. Feel free to ask us for a list of agencies for Ang Thong.

How to get there?

It is not possible to visit independently, as the protected park is open only to organized tours. Therefore, it is practically essential to book through an agency on-site from Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, or Koh Tao.

Some small private companies organize 2-day excursions with an overnight stay on a boat in Ang Thong.

The journey takes between 50 and 60 minutes from Koh Samui and approximately 60 to 90 minutes from Koh Phangan, depending on the boats and weather conditions.

Good to know: The park is closed every year from November 1st to December 23rd due to the monsoon season.
