Getting an antigen / PCR test in Thailand

Jun 24 2024

In the context of the fight against Covid-19 and following the revised travel rules to and from abroad issued by the Ministry of Interior effective from December 4, 2021, travelers returning to France from Thailand must present a negative PCR or antigen test taken within 48 hours.

If you need to know how to get an antigen or PCR test from Thailand, Sawa'Discovery can explain.

Getting an antigen test in Thailand

Our first recommendation is to opt for an antigen test. It's faster and less expensive than a PCR test, making it your best option to meet this new health requirement.

Antigen tests at pharmacies

Antigen test kits are available for purchase at pharmacies for around 300 THB (approximately 8 euros). Unfortunately, pharmacists cannot provide an English language certificate necessary for boarding your flight. This option is therefore advisable only for self-testing in case of doubt.

Antigen tests at hospitals

To obtain the required certificate, you'll need to visit a hospital where a doctor can issue a Covid-free certificate following your antigen test. Although the turnaround remains quick (15 - 20 minutes), the cost is slightly higher than at pharmacies (500 THB, about 13 euros).

Getting a PCR test in Thailand

Since December 4, anyone aged 12 or older returning to France from Thailand must have a negative PCR test taken at least 48 hours before departure. It's essential for all travelers to get tested before returning.

In Thailand, PCR tests are available at all hospitals and clinics nationwide. There's no need to return to Bangkok if your stay ends in Chiang Mai or Phuket, for example.

PCR tests typically cost 2000 Baht (54 euros) for results within 12 hours, and 3900 Baht (105 euros) for results within 6 hours. Some private clinics also offer results within 3 hours.

Before returning to France, you must also sign a sworn statement declaring you have no symptoms and have not been in contact with anyone who has tested positive for Covid-19. This attestation also serves as permission for a PCR test upon arrival in France. The attestation is the same for all travelers from countries classified as Orange zones, such as Thailand.

You can download the attestation here.

Where to get a PCR test in Thailand?

Thailand has numerous hospitals, clinics, and centers where you can get a PCR test. It's advisable to make an appointment to ensure you can get tested before your departure. Your Sawa'Discovery agency can assist with scheduling appointments.

In Thailand, some hospitals or clinics have drive-thru facilities, allowing you to get tested from your vehicle without leaving it.

All the addresses mentioned above also offer antigen tests. However, we recommend getting a PCR test before leaving Thailand because some airlines require it. Don't take the risk of being denied boarding due to a simple test issue.

Each of these locations provides certificates in English confirming the test and results. It's important to note that while pharmacies offer antigen tests, they do not provide certificates. Therefore, it's essential to visit a hospital, clinic, or laboratory.
