Discover Madagascar: The three bays

Mar 07 2025

The Three Bays, located near Diego Suarez in northern Madagascar, comprise Dune Bay, Pigeon Bay, and Sakalava Bay. These bays are renowned for their stunning white sand beaches, contrasting beautifully with the turquoise waters of the sea. They are popular destinations for tours and excursions, often undertaken by 4×4 vehicles.

The bays are connected by a sandy road and a coastal walking path, offering an excellent option for explorers who prefer to navigate independently. Walking along the trail allows visitors to enjoy the breathtaking views, listen to the waves crashing, and observe the local birdlife.

The third bay, Sakalava Bay, is home to the Club Baie des Sakalava, a tourist resort featuring ten bungalows. The bay’s open exposure to strong winds and large waves from the Indian Ocean makes it one of the island’s top surfing spots. Visitors can reach the bay by sea or via the road leading to Ramena. Despite its beauty and appeal, it remains relatively undiscovered by the masses.

One option to start your journey is to visit Dune Bay by passing through Ramena, though this route requires a 4×4 vehicle. Visitors taking this path should be aware of the potential need to cross a military zone, where they may encounter corrupt guards demanding bribes for passage. To avoid this, you can begin your exploration at Sakalava Bay. From there, you can access the other bays via a steep road, enjoying distant views of the stunning Emerald Sea.

The Three Bays offer a unique blend of natural beauty, adventure, and tranquility, making them a must-see for travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience in Madagascar.
