The village of Arslanbob is a typical mountain village in Kyrgyzstan, in the province of Jalal-Abad. It is in the heart of one of the largest walnut forests in the world, 11,000 ha (27,182 acres) total. It is indeed an ideal place to relax. You can go fishing, horseback riding or hiking in the mountains and discover beautiful places like the famous walnut forest and two waterfalls.

Discovering the Arslanbob village

Nested in the snowy cliffs of the Babash-Ata summit, Arslanbob offers many activities to its visitors. Arslanbob is a small village of 1,500 inhabitants, mostly from the Uzbek ethnic group. Its culture, traditions and food is different from what you may see in other parts of Kyrgyzstan.

Arslanbob is a place of pilgrimage for many Uzbek Muslims. The village is home to the grave of Arslanbob, an important historical and religious figure in Uzbek Islamic history. The locals will welcome you warmly and immerse you in Uzbek culture. Women generally wear a colored dress and a headscarf. Men like gathering in small circles in the street to discuss.

At the foot of the Babash-Ata, the village is a great spot for hikes and simply for enjoying wilderness. The legendary walnut forest which borders the village is the ideal place for a one day hike. Its many walnut trees can reach a height of up to 30 m (98.4 ft). You will also discover the 23 meters high sacred waterfall known as the "Cave of Forty Angels". There, you will be able to buy souvenirs.

On the other side of the village stands one of Kyrgyzstan’s highest waterfalls with 80 m (262 ft) height. The hike takes a few hours and has a fairly steep and difficult portion, so get ready! A panoramic view on the village and forest at the top will take your breath away. The village has suitable accommodation and also offers small trekking tours in the surrounding area for those who wish to explore more the region. There are also hot springs where you can have a healing swim.

How to get to Arslanbob?

There are buses and collective taxis from Bishkek to Arslanbob. The taxi leaves the station as soon as it is full. It takes about 8 to 9 hours to reach the village.
