Naryn is a small city of approximately 53,000 inhabitants, located in the center of Kyrgyzstan, nearly 200 km from Bishkek. It takes it name from the nearby Naryn River, which then flows into the biggest river of Central Asia, the Syr-Daria. It is also said that its name comes from the Mongolian language, in which Naryn means "sunny".

Naryn is a magnificent region made of high mountains, steppes, and a vast green meadow green at a high altitude. The small town, although with no great tourist interest in itself, will be a very good place to rest and relax before continuing your Kyrgyz adventure. It’s actually the highest city in the country, and due to the difficulty of living at such a high altitude and in such a rude climate, its residents benefit from an early retirement and complementary pay.

The small village, surrounded by mountains and crossed by the Naryn River, has many options for accommodation. Close to Son Kul Lake, Kel Suu Lake and Tash Rabat, Naryn is a perfect exploration base and a good stop between treks. You will be able to quietly discover the city, stroll in its streets and by its river, and meet locals. Seize the opportunity to test local gastronomy such as the beshbarmak. You can also visit the regional Museum that exhibits objects of nomadic life. The other attraction of the city is the mosque, located 2.5 km (1.2 miles) away from the Center.

Naryn is an ideal stop to discover the beautiful wilderness of the region. It has large alpine lakes, valleys, steppes and national parks that are all great for hiking and horseback riding. Naryn is the last city before going towards the south of Kyrgyzstan and the Chinese border, a wild and isolated region of the country.
