Ubud Palace

Located in the center of Ubud, across from the Central Market, Puri Saren Agung consists of a vast complex of historical buildings. Greatly appreciated for its sophisticated architecture this royal compound is one of the main cultural & artistic interests in Bali.

History

Puri Saren Agung is the official residence of Ubud’s royal family. The original buildings date from 1640. The king Tjokorda Putu Kandel (1800-1823) extended its contruction. Nowadays, the heirs of the last Balinese king occupy the palace. The complex collapsed during the 1917 earthquake and was rebuilt in 1928 to bolster tourism is Ubud. The Tjampuhan hotel building was built during the same period to host the palace’s guests.

Visit Ubud’s Palace

The palace comprises a number of large buildings, a private temple and a meeting room. The auditorium Wantilan is a large space used exclusively for meetings. The Pura Marajan Agung temple located on the north side of the compound serves the royal family. Its intricate decorations and ornamental carvings are even more elaborate than in the other parts of the compound. Just across the palace we find Sosrobaju, the private residence of the royal family.

The front part of the palace including the courtyards, buildings and the garden are open to the public. However, the back section consisting of the family private quarters is closed.

This historical piece of art tells a great deal about the region’s past century through its amazing carving and divine statues.

You will also discover a nice garden and a lotus pond. Statues of Dewi Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, music and art surround the basin.

Part of the palace in used to exhibit and promote art, dance, and Balinese literature. Dance and music performances are held every evening at 7.30. Better buy your ticket in the afternoon and arrive early so you get a good spot.

Puri Saren Agung Ubud is an hour drive from Denpasar .

  • Opening hours and cost

The section opened to visitors is free. It opens from 8am to 7pm. It is necessary to wear a sarong but you can rent one at the door if you forget yours.
