HISTORY

The Gohil Rajput of Suryavanshi clan confronted many challenges in Marwar. Around 1260 AD, they moved to Gujarat and established three capitals namely: Sejakpur, Umrala and Sihor.

In 1722-1723, forces led y Khanthaji Kadani and Pilaji Geakwad tried to invade sihor but Maharaja Bhav Singh Ji Gohil protected the land and succeeded in repelling the force. After the attack, Maharaja Bhav Singh Ji Gohil realised that the reason for the continuous attack on Sihor is its location. Therefor, in 1723, he established a new capital near Vadva village, 20 km away from Sihor, and named it as Bhavnagar. It was intentionally chosen because of its potential for maritime trade. Till independence, Bhavnagar state was ruled by Gohil Rajput clan.

In 1947, the Deputy Prime Minister of the newly independent Indian Union Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel undertook the ambitious and complex process of unifying 565 princely states with the Union of India, Krishna Kumar Singh Ji was the first ruler to hand over his kingdom to the union of India.
