History

On the request of Maharaja Krishna Chandra Manikya Bahadur, the capital of the princely state of Swadhin Tripura was shifted from Rangamati to old Agartala, during the nineteenth century. The town was called as Haveli. However, Maharaja again decided to shift his capital to New Haveli in 1849, in an attempt to avoid frequent invasions by Kuki tribe and to maintain communications with British Bengal.

Administratively, the municipality of Agartala was formed during the rule of Maharaja Bir Chandra Manikya(1862-1896). The British reconstructed the city during the colonial rule. From the introduction of new roads to the development of markets and the construction of new buildings, Agartala was under the process of modernization throughout 1940s.

Today

Situated on the edge of the river Haora, close to the border with Bangladesh in the north-east of India, Agartala has retained the status as the state capital of Tripura. The city is a home to 19 indigenous tribal groups and Bengali speaking non-tribal.

Past the doors of the city, palaces stand right away with their splendid architecture brushing perfection. Staggering avenues, the red coloured government buildings are in contrast with white coloured British buildings. Because of their history and authenticity, some of the monuments have been included in UNESCO world heritage sites.

Agartala equally caters food lovers who are in search of new flavors. The city is full of restaurants offering a variety of Indian dishes, largely inspired by Bengali cuisine. Moreover, the menus are particularly affordable as compared to other parts of India. Climate

Located in an area with a humid subtropical climate, Agartala has particularly long summers, spreading from April to October with an average temperature of 28 ° C, a high level of sunshine during the day and frequent rains. From November to March, winter is characterized by moderate drought conditions, with an average temperature of 18 ° C, making this season the best time to visit the city.

Agartala has an airport well connected with the main cities of India: Kolkata, Delhi, Guwhati, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Silchar, Chennai and Banglore.

By land, the city is accessible via national highway 44. Buses or rental cars serve as shuttle buses for the journey. Agartala is well-connected with railway line, connecting to Kumarghat, Lumding, Dehli, Dharmanagar et Akhaura (Bangladesh)
