Mar 26 2025

Cambodia is a top destination for travelers seeking exoticism and authenticity. Between the remnants of the Khmer civilization, lush preserved nature, and a smiling and welcoming people, it's impossible not to fall under the charm of this kingdom in Southeast Asia!

For a two-week itinerary in Cambodia, visit the capital Phnom Penh, Kratié, the iconic Angkor temples, and the beautiful beaches of Sihanoukville.

For a three-week itinerary, you can add an excursion to the Mondulkiri province before heading to the charming towns of Kampot and Kep in the south of the country.

Phnom Penh

Located at the confluence of the Mekong and Tonlé Sap rivers, Phnom Penh is a must-visit stop on your itinerary in Cambodia. Often referred to as the "Pearl of Asia," the capital combines tradition and modernity with its futuristic skyscrapers, colonial homes, and Khmer architectural treasures. Don't miss the Royal Palace, the National Museum, and the moving Genocide Museum. Afterward, head to the picturesque Phsar Reatrey night market to sample Cambodian culinary specialties.

Angkor

Angkor is an incredible site that alone justifies a trip to Cambodia!

A UNESCO World Heritage site, this ancient capital of the Khmer Empire is filled with remarkable millennial relics. The Angkor complex spans more than 400 square kilometers and can be explored on foot, by tuk-tuk, or by bike. The Angkor Wat temple is undoubtedly the most iconic site. A true symbol of the country, it appears on the Cambodian flag and attracts thousands of visitors every year. Be sure to visit the Bayon Temple with its Elephant Terrace, the Pre Rup Temple, and the legendary Ta Prohm, which is engulfed by the roots of a massive kapok tree.

Preah Vihear

Located on the Cambodia-Thailand border, the Preah Vihear Temple is a true cultural and architectural gem. Perched on a plateau at the edge of a cliff, this archaeological site is a must-see for history and architecture enthusiasts. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it is one of the must-visit locations on a first trip to Cambodia.

Battambang

Nestled on the banks of the Sangker River, Battambang charms travelers with its authenticity and tranquility. Although it is the second-largest city in Cambodia, it has the feel of a large village with a provincial atmosphere. Stroll through the streets to admire the beautiful colonial architecture and traditional Khmer homes. Then, head to the Banon Temple for a lovely panorama of the Cambodian countryside. A visit to the Phnom Sampov Temple is a must to witness the bats' incredible sunset flight.

Kratie

Located on the banks of the Mekong River, Kratie is a charming stop to include in your Cambodia itinerary. With its colonial-era remnants, temples, and pagodas, Kratie offers a glimpse into timeless Cambodia.

The region is also famous for being home to the last of the endangered Irrawaddy freshwater dolphins. You might have the chance to spot them during a boat excursion at Kampi, a natural site composed of a dozen small islands north of Kratie. For a unique and authentic experience, head to the island of Koh Trong and spend the night with a local family in one of the traditional Cham homes.

Sihanoukville

For a relaxing break under the coconut trees, head to Sihanoukville! Located on the shores of the Gulf of Thailand, it is the most famous beach resort in Cambodia. Popular with both locals and tourists, it boasts the country's most beautiful beaches, such as Victory Beach, Otres Beach, and Independence Beach. Palm trees, turquoise waters, white sand – the setting is paradise-like.

Sihanoukville offers a wide range of water activities: scuba diving, sea kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling, and more.

Don't miss the boat excursion to Koh Rong Island, a true little gem in the sea.

Mondulkiri Province

Known as the "Switzerland of Cambodia," Mondulkiri Province is the perfect destination to explore the natural beauty of Cambodia's landscapes.

Easily accessible for travelers, it offers a chance to discover another side of the country, away from the beaten path. In this wild region, you can meet the animist Bunong people and explore lush jungles, mountains, and waterfalls.

Mondulkiri is a great stop for hiking enthusiasts, offering prime locations for observing wildlife in its natural habitat.

Kampot and Kep

Kampot and Kep are two small towns located south of Sihanoukville, surrounded by rice paddies.

Kampot has preserved its authenticity with its streets lined with charming yet slightly worn colonial houses. The town is famous for its pepper, considered some of the best in the world. Visit a pepper plantation to discover the secrets of growing these delicious berries, cultivated in the Kampot countryside.

Then head to Kep, a charming seaside town known for its crab market and national park, ideal for hiking.
